Dual Language Program
Would you like your child to be bilingual and biliterate in English and Spanish?
The Sunnyslope Dual Language Program is offering a once in a lifetime opportunity for your child to:
- Be academically competent in TWO languages
- Develop Social-cultural competence
- Have more work and career opportunities in the future
If you’re interested in enrolling your child in the dual language program, you are invited to attend ONE informational meetings and complete an application. Meeting dates will be posted in January 2023. Kindergarten and 1st grade students are accepted regardless of language ability. Second through sixth grade students are required to be screened to determine language level in Spanish. Students will be accepted within their language group (English dominant, Spanish Dominant, Bilingual) according to their application date. Students not able to be placed will be put on a waiting list.
With the expertise of our dedicated teachers and staff, we prepare students for life in global society. We are proud to provide them with the latest technology and strong education foundation through our 50:50 English/Spanish dual immersion program.
What does the research show? Research regarding dual language education shows that once children are fully bilingual, they outperform their peers in English-only programs on standardized state assessments. Students in dual immersion programs have high levels of self-esteem, high academic competence and motivation. Students are better prepared for the global job market where a second language gives them a competitive edge.
How does the program work? Our program follows the 50:50 model. In Kindergarten through sixth grade, 50% of instruction is in Spanish and 50% of the instruction is in English. Academic subjects (math, social studies, science) are taught in either English or Spanish. Reading and writing is taught in both languages daily. To achieve the goal of bilingual literacy, long-term parental commitment is necessary to ensure that students remain in the program from through Sixth grade.
